Advice & Consultancy
In 2022, a local Hertfordshire couple purchased Tonwell Tower, (an old, disused, 24 metre high water tower in the town of Ware), with the intention of turning it into an Airbnb. As I write, they are very near completion! The picture shows the tower before work began.
They approached the horticultural college at Capel Manor to launch a competition to design the garden, car parking for at least 4 vehicles, bike store and a large turning space in a very tight plot at the end of a residential close.
I entered this competition with my class buddy and fellow designer Laura. Our design encompassed green walls, beautiful Himalayan Birch trees, draping plants and glass windows and seats set in concrete walls to reflect the brutalist style of architecture. On the roof we included stunning planting, a yoga space and a star-gazing observation deck to take advantage of the dark rural Hertfordshire setting. Whilst we lost out on the top place to Lucy, our supremely talented classmate, we received a ‘Highly Commended’ for our efforts.
As well as drawings, plans and elevations for this project, we submitted a 30cm high model of the tower for consideration. The clients loved it and their kids were enchanted.
The photographs below show the stage by stage creation of the model as I put it together. THere’s even an electric car charging point - see if you can spot it.
This is the real 24 metre high Tonwell Tower, originally a water tower in Hertfordshire.

Icing container used to test idea and start measuring

A cone of paper to create the main body. Card used for concrete upright posts on building

Main building complete, comparing car for scale

Layout planning and deciding whether to use lawn

Alternative design with wooden paths to mirror the building
Trees made from garden twigs, paint and kitchen sponges, waiting to dry

How do my Himalayan Birch trees look?

Chopstick mark the edge of the actual plot which is very small compared to the 23 metre+ building

Have to keep checking everything at eye level

This is the right scale, I'm happy with this car

How does grey gravel look?

Eye level checking again

Laying out all elements now, starting to take shape

Can I fit the cars in?

Green walls made, everything now being stuck down, so finishing touches begin

Power is in ! Even our miniatures are eco-friendly

Roof terrace flooring is in, these are sections of a bamboo sushi mat

Magic happens when the lights go on!

And the whole thing is complete. Light switch hidden in the bushes.
Here are the materials I used to create the model:
Betty Crocker icing tub (washed obviously)
Cereal box
Paper / Cardboard
Glue - lots of it
Gravel
Florist oasis
Spray can lid for base to stand in
Small stones collected from the street and garden
Twigs from the garden
Old sponges
Paint
Perspex for windows
Toothpicks
Fabric for cushions
Acrylic for water feature
Sushi rolling mat for the wooden design on the floor and roof garden
