At My Garden Designer, we strive to work with the planet, not against it.

Of course, lighting can create a magical atmosphere in the garden but should be used with care because it requires energy and can affect wildlife.

We advise clients to use gentle solar powered lights which harness the free power of the sun and offer a gentle glow. Alternatively, very low voltage LED bulbs don’t give off much light, just enough and they last for 1,000s of hours.

Keeping bright lights on in the garden for a prolonged amount of time is not a good idea because it can scare wildlife away from our gardens. This is not good for them or for us.

When using electric lights, we advise our clients to use programme timers for their garden lights, putting them on for short periods of time for everyone to enjoy.

We work with garden lighting specialists who are constantly designing new ways to enjoy subtle lighting.

We believe that every drop of water is a precious commodity for our planet and our lives. We therefore specify plants which have lower water requirements in order to save water and money.

We give you peace of mind by complying with all SuDS (Sustainable Urban Drainage) requirements to control water run-off and wastage, and prevent flooding and pollution.

We use permeable landscaping materials in our garden designs, which control rainwater, and avoid pooling and flooding as the British climate becomes warmer. We also use European style water management practices in raised beds and borders to conserve water.

Our designers specify the use of suitable containers, which retain more water, require less water and are positioned in the right place to conserve water. What’s more, we add water butts to all garden designs to harvest free rainwater. This can be used rather than tap water, saving money and resources.

We also encourage our clients to use ‘grey’ water from washing, bathing and washing up in the house to save water.

Irrigation systems are one of the best investments you can make for your garden. We recommend all gardens have them fitted as a guaranteed way of saving money and water.

Irrigation systems protect the environment by delivering water exactly where it is needed and therefore not wasting a drop.

Additionally, by avoiding hand watering with a hose attachment, irrigation nozzles target the root area and avoid watering leaves which can lead to leaf rot and black spot on roses.
