Tropical gardens are like a lush, hidden world behind your house.

Jungle or tropical themed gardens create wonder and surprise with their big, bold, leafy plants. They are so striking that they don’t really need flowers to make an impact!

A jungle garden doesn’t have to comprise a huge space, either. Even small tropical gardens can still punch well above their weight. We can take features from the style mood boards to create your perfect tropical haven.

  • The general feeling in a tropical garden is always lushness

  • Hard landscaping can be in more or less any style, because it’s only there to show off the plants

  • Planting is definitely the main event with big bold leaves that vary in texture, shape and size, creating an intriguing blend of interest and fascination. The rays of the sun and shadows cast by the planting play with light and reflection

  • There are several plants that can survive all but the very harshest winters in the UK, as long as they are chosen with care

What could be a better way to while away a few precious moments than sitting in a sheltered nook with a book and a cup of tea, surrounded by lush foliage and possibly a small water feature?

Many tropical plants do well in the UK, but they do need a little care:

  • Work well in spaces sheltered from wind and enjoy being sheltered by other plants

  • Depending on whether you have the space to store any plants under cover in deep winter, will influence the ones we choose for your scheme. If you can protect them over winter, then a much larger range of specimens becomes available to you

  • Some plants need wrapping in fleece in cold winters. They look unsightly for those few months but they do pay dividends during the rest of the time

  • Remove any dead or damaged leaves

By following a few hints and maintenance tips from My Garden Designer, you will be able to enjoy your tropical garden now and for years to come.
